Genetic progress occurs through the DISCOVERY and PROPAGATION OF GENETIC "OUTLIERS". Genetic outliers are found by applying SELECTION pressure on LARGE POPULATIONS of cattle. Very FEW HERDS of registered cattle HAVE large ENOUGH NUMBERS to provide truly meaningful selection opportunity. The Profit Maker Bulls program enables the participating breeders to POOL their bull calves in order to have INDIVIDUAL BREEDERS calves COMPETE with a LARGER POPULATION than would otherwise be possible. This competition takes two forms: First, the test enables FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE to be compared between bulls, between sires and between breeders.   Next, the subsequent sale of the bulls measures the ACCEPTANCE LEVEL of the bulls by the commercial cattleman. This can also be compared between individual bulls, between sires and between breeders. Both comparisons provide valuable feedback to the individual breeder. This FEEDBACK ENABLES the individual breeders to make CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT in their breeding program. In addition, the COMPETITION of the individual bull calves WITHIN the LARGER POPULATION being tested provides MEANINGFUL SELECTION OPPORTUNITY. In this way, some of the best young calves IDENTIFY themselves as that next POTENTIAL OUTLIER.
